I'm happy to have a piece in OhNo!Dooms latest show "Super Button Mashers"! Mega opening: This Saturday Feb. 11 6pm - 10pm, so be sure to stop by if your in the Chicago area. Bellow is a pic of my piece titled "Take That" It's 18" x 18" the image is drawn with Sharpie and painted with watercolor. I wanted to try something different so I thought it would be fun to combine my stark black Sharpie doodle style with the soft and flowing watercolor style. The dimensional frame is crafted out of chipboard and then spray painted. I haven't touched watercolors in like 10 years so it took a while to get back in the flow but it was fun and I may do more pieces like this in the future.

I'm very excited to have a piece in "I Know You Art, But What Am I?" Pee-Wee Herman tribute art show at Gallery 1988 in Venice, CA! Opening reception is Friday July 29th. I'm a big fan of Pee-Wee so I'm super stoked this is my first piece for a Gallery 1988 show! Below are some pics of my piece titled "Andy?!" in and out of the box/frame, based on a scene from the movie Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, one of my all time faves. I really enjoy making these large scale pieces (this one is about 2 feet tall) for art shows and got plans to do more! They are made of chipboard, cardstock and spray-paint and then put in a wood box/frame.

Here is a paper automata I created to show at the Makers Faire. Turn the Crank and he plays banjo while taping his foot! See the video below for him in action. I'm thinking he would be a fun pre-cut kit. Maybe I should start a Kick Starter to fund production. He needs to be printed front to back which makes it not very feasible as a download plus lots of complex parts to cut.

Here is an idea I had that I tried to get someone to publish but no one seems interested it's a "Bedtime" pop-up book that has lights that allows you to read in the dark and project shadow puppets on the wall as you read. I thought it was a nifty idea.

So I'm doing something a little different this time for the Papertoy of the Month. Usually these are free papertoys to download, however faced with the disaster in Japan this last month, me and my coworkers at C3 felt we needed to do something creative to help the people of Japan. Paper Koi is an ongoing project to benefit the Red Cross. For a suggested $10 donation you can download the first in a series of Paper Koi, pictured above, the blank template and then you can check back periodically over the comming weeks for new designs by other C3 artist. I designed the template and my pal Steve Duffendack did the surface design for the first Koi in the series, pictured above. I'm very excited to share this months free papertoy Bouru with you, a collaboration between me and my pal cartoonist and illustrator Sam Garcia. It was great fun working with someone as passionate and talented as Sam. When he sent me some pics of Bouru I instantly saw him as a papertoy. You can download the pdf here for letter size or you can snag an A4 size here. We are trying something a little different with the pdf this time, it has a cover, an instruction page and then 2 page template. To save ink and paper you just need to print the last two.

Free Papertoy of the Month February: Stubby

Some pencils can just draw, others not so much. I'm not sure how this happens but it does and when you find a pencil that can draw you keep it around. A friend, a collaborator and trusted creative partner. But there is only so much lead a pencil has to give and after many hard fought creative battles it's left short, used up, stubby. So this papertoy "Stubby" is a tribute to those great pencils past, present and future who so proudly sacrifice there graphite soul in service to the higher creative calling!
This is a pretty simple one to build for you who like the easy ones. Hope you enjoy it.

I haven't posted a lot of new papertoys over the past couple of years due to my crazy schedule and I got to say I've really missed sharing my work with everybody. Sharing my creations worldwide and in a format that just about anybody could participate in for minimal cost and getting to see pics and talk with you guys is the whole reason I got into this crazy papertoy business to begin with. So for 2011 I'm reinstating the free papertoy of the month. So check back every month for a new toy in '11.

This is my piece for the Cubes & Cylinders: The BoxFox Art Show at Munky King in LA tomorrow night in Celebration of my pal Coopers 11th Birthday. It's inspired by Super Coopers Box Fox characters it's made of chipboard and spray paint and sits in a 30" x 30" wood box with a plexiglass front. I really enjoyed making this and all ready have plans to do some similar pieces soon!

Lots of folks ask me where I get the ideas for my characters and paper toys and I usually tell them from doodles. I always keep an old piece of paper from the recycle bin under my key board at work and every once in a while a little doodle spills out. I've been uploading them on my flickr. Also I am working on a new free toy I hope to have up by the end of this month. It's been to long!

Here is my vinyl toy/papertoy mash-up Vernon. He's my first ever custom of an 8" Dunny. The head and hands are dunny+sculpy and the body , arms and feet are chipboard, paper and spray paint.It was a fun challenge to get everything working together, I'll definitely be revisiting this idea soon. Here is a 30" by 30" "art table" I made for Grinder's West in KC featuring Comic Monkey. It will be covered in glass and used as a table and then auctioned off after a year. It's only 2.5" deep. Made with colored paper, chipboard and spray paint. It'll depute in Grinders the first Friday of April. A real challenge keeping it only 2.5" high but it was a lot of fun. More pics on my flickr.

I got to do a cover for Kansas City's alt news weekly The Pitch. I've been wanting to do some more paper sculpture as illustration stuff, so I was very excited to get this job. I really wanted it to feel and look "real" and hand made not all computery and virtual. Here is a little slide show of the process of making the thing. Every part is hand built out of paper.

My pal and fellow papertoy artist Mckibillo (of NaniBird fame) is hosting an Urban Paper show in Tokyo. It will be at Café Pause in Ikebukuro and will run from Sept. 7th to the 20th. The show will feature paper work from many of the Artist featured in Urban Paper book. Paper Pac-Man 4 Rivet

Here is a paper sculpture I made that will be part of the 80's cartoon inspired "Well be right back after these messages" show at Rivet this August 1-31. I loved the Pac-Man animated series as a kid so this piece is inspired by that. I'm really hooked on making these one of a kind paper sculptures it's a great break from the computer screen! More pics of Pac on my flickr.

Arnie for Urban Paper at Subwalk

This is a papertoy I designed exclusively for the Urban Paper show at Subwalk in the Netherlands this August. I named him Arnie after the first boss i ever had. Rough and abrasive on the outside but a a real good guy on the inside. Also Subwalk is in a town called Arnhem so it works as a nod to that too. Soon I'll post some making of photos if your interested on my flicker.

And yes I did lose it once or twice gluing all those damn little spikes together.

Seems my papertoys are always made of flat or curved surfaces. I have be seeing tons of geometric paper folding online. So this idea came about from me trying to incorporate a geometric dimensional texture into one of my goofy papertoys.

Hand cut colored paper papertoys

Here is something new I've been working with this week that I'm really getting excited about, making papertoys with only glue and hand cut colored paper. I've been looking for a way lately to get more hand crafted goodness in my toys and little less digital. I really enjoyed making these and definitely want to explore this technique more. These are also bigger than the download versions. I'm also working on foot tall colored paper version of Oliver Ollie.
I'll be debuting these and more at the Urban Paper Launch show May 2 at Mobius 3300 W. 6th St., Los Angeles, CA please stop by if your in the area. It's gonna be a blast, hope to see you there!

Here's some late breaking news! I'll have a few pieces in the Papertoy and Pop Out show at Pink Hobo in Minneapolis MN, Saturday April 18th! Due to my email dumping the original call for artist into my spam folder :( I didn't get an invite till last Friday and wasn't able to send them anything new for the show. I will have a few hand built toys from older templates, letterpress prints, and signed copies of Urban Paper there so if your in the area check it out. April 11- I'll be at the Papershapers show in LA at the Scion Instilation where my winning custom for the Giant Robot Shin Tanaka paper robot contest will be on display.
April 18-19 I'll be at SPACE (small press and alternative comics expo) in Columbus Ohio.
And finally the big one...

I'd like to invite everybody in the Los Angeles area to come out on May 2 and help us celebrate the release of Urban Paper. Nicebunny, Christopher Bonnette and myself will be on hand to sign books. There will be a papertoy art show too featuring one of a kind works from many of the designers featured in the book. See ya there!

My custom Shin Tanaka for Giant Robot contest!

Here is a custom of Shin Tanaka's papertoy I did for the Giant Robot/Scion contest.
It actually won the Grand Prize, a trip to LA to meet Shin and have my custom at the Papershapers show. WOOT! I'm super excited to meet Shin as I've been a huge fan of his work for years and excited to see the Papershapers show with so many great artist involved! April is going to be one busy month!

Urban Paper update!

I just got my first shipment of books this weekend and got a last minute table at Planet Comic Con here in KC and was able to meet and greet a lot of great folks and sell a few copies. It was so last minute I didn't even get achance to alert anyone. The above pic is me (to busy for hair cuts!) at the Con with a display of the papertoys that are in Urban Paper. I noticed that the Amazon site shows "In Stock" instead of pre-order on the book so those who ordered it through amazon should be getting it pretty darn soon! Yay! Here is a little taste of the book.

I'll be attending SPACE (Small Press and Comics Expo) in Columbus Ohio on April 18 and 19 and will have plenty of copies of Urban Paper on hand!
Also something very big is brewing for May 2 at Mobius in LA, more on that very soon!

Look what I got in the mail this week! It's the first advanced copy of my book "Urban Paper". After over 2 years in the making, it was so awesome to hold a real book in my hands! It really turned out great my editor Amy Schell and the books designer Grace Ring did a great job bringing it all together. It'll be late April when the book is officially released. You can pre-order a copy from Amazon with the link on the right side of this page. More soon on a release party/gallery show and some fun contests and stuff to promote it.

I was delighted to score this illustration for Newsweek it was the cover of the Enterprise section. The robot is paper and the Rupert figure is Sculpey. This was great fun I hope to do more papertoys as illustrations soon. This ran in Dec 15 subscriber edition of Newsweek.

I've just put the last 7 Comic Monkeys kits at the Custom Paper Toy Company. Once these are gone that's it, I'm not making anymore. I hope to get more Badge Cats made and have them up in the store soon also. Sorry for the lack of updates lately things have been super crazy the last couple of months!
